Last week, Hyundai Motor Group announced it will trial a RoboRide car-hailing service with the all-new, critically acclaimed IONIQ 5 battery-electric crossover. Its chosen testbed? The bustling Gangnam District, one of metropolitan Seoul's most congested areas. Operated in collaboration with artificial intelligence (AI) startup Jin Mobility, it will be the first autonomous car-hailing service to operate in the district.
Jin Mobility will deploy two IONIQ5 RoboRide units via its i.M car-hailing mobility platform. Through the pilot program, Hyundai looks to gather valuable data on autonomous driving in heavily populated areas to further develop its level 4 autonomous driving technology.
Hyundai Senior Vice President and Head of the Autonomous Driving Center Woongjun Jang stated, "At Hyundai Motor Group, we are developing level 4 autonomous driving technology based on the internally developed Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), whose functionality and safety are verified through mass production and successful commercial launch. We expect this RoboRide pilot service will be an important inflection point that will enable us to internalize autonomous driving technology."
The Hyundai IONIQ has already garnered much fanfare in the consumer space for its unique futuristic style, engaging performance, practical range, and ultra-fast charging capability. IONIQ 5 HTRAC AWD models equip a potent dual-motor electric powertrain (320 horsepower, 446 pound-feet of torque) with an EPA-estimated 256 miles of range. 225-horsepower RWD models achieve an EPA-estimated 303 miles. And at a 350-kW DC fast-charging station, the IONIQ 5 can add 68 miles to its range in just five minutes and replenish its battery from 10% to 80% in ~18 minutes.
